Judgement is the penultimate card of the Major Arcana — the great awakening that precedes final integration. In the Rider-Waite image, the archangel Gabriel sounds a trumpet from the clouds as men, women, and children rise from their coffins, arms outstretched toward the sky. The gray-blue mountains in the background represent the boundary between the mortal and the transcendent. This is not a scene of punishment — it is a scene of resurrection, of answering a call that has been building for a long time. In Jungian psychology, Judgement represents the moment of metanoia — a fundamental transformation of consciousness where you see your entire life's journey with sudden, startling clarity. All the lessons, failures, relationships, and struggles click into place like pieces of a puzzle you could not see while living inside it. The trumpet call is the Self speaking to the ego, saying: it is time to rise above the narrow identity you have been living in and embrace the larger purpose your experiences have been preparing you for. The coffins are not prisons — they are the limited definitions of yourself that you have outgrown. When you draw Judgement upright, you are being called to a decisive moment of reckoning and renewal. A chapter of your life is reaching its definitive conclusion, and the insights gained from that chapter are ready to propel you into something profoundly new. This may manifest as a career pivot that finally aligns with your true calling, a relationship decision you have been postponing, or an inner shift that changes how you relate to yourself. Judgement asks you to listen to the trumpet — that persistent inner voice you have been muting — and respond with the courage it demands. Rise from whatever coffin you have been lying in. Judgement reversed indicates that you are hearing the call but refusing to answer. The trumpet is sounding — you know, somewhere deep inside, that a major life change is overdue — but fear, guilt, or self-doubt keeps you lying in the coffin.
